CHAPTER 6

TRUST EXERCISES

Mia shuffled her feet through light, fluffy snow as she walked the four blocks to the gymnastics training center. She didn’t jog or prance with pointed toes, like she did at the start of the season. Her emotions rose and dipped after what happened at the meet against Town Ridge.

One minute, she was energized and determined to prove that Allison was behind it all. The next minute, she was depressed and angry that one person’s need to win was ruining her team’s whole season.

Mia entered the training center and stomped the flakes from her boots. Then she headed to the locker room. She shoved what she could into a tiny locker and piled the rest of her belongings under one of the benches.

A moment later, Allison walked in, pulling her hair into a ponytail.

“Hey,” said Allison.

“Hey,” said Mia.

Mia was almost ready to leave, but now she wanted to hang around. Maybe she could get Allison to say something that proved she was guilty.

Mia pulled her hair tie out, shook her curls loose, and started over.

“Was your cell phone blowing up over the weekend?” asked Mia.

“Why?” asked Allison. She took off her winter coat and shoved it into a locker.

“Just curious,” said Mia. “You know, because of what happened at the Town Ridge meet.”

“Well, yeah, my friends and family kept texting me. They wanted to know what happened,” said Allison. She kicked off her sneakers and then removed her hoodie and sweatpants. She pulled out a pair of slide sandals from her backpack. She dropped them to the floor and slid her socked feet into them.

“And what did you tell them?”

“I told them what happened … duh,” said Allison. She adjusted the black shorts she wore over her purple long-sleeved leotard.

This is getting me nowhere, thought Mia. Think, think, think.

“Did you see the local news? They covered the itching powder incident,” said Mia. She pulled her hair up into a ponytail for the third time.

“Yup,” said Allison. She then turned around and started to walk out of the locker room into the gym.

Mia jogged to chase after her. “Do you think they’ll catch the person who did it?”

Allison stopped suddenly, causing Mia to bump into her.

“What is your problem, Hernandez? Give me some space,” said Allison. She walked around Mia to go back into the locker area.

“What are you doing?” asked Mia.

“It’s none of your business,” said Allison. “But if you really must know, I forgot my water bottle. Is it okay with you if I get it?”

“Yeah, of course,” said Mia. Her cheeks warmed from embarrassment. She wasn’t very good at questioning suspects. She wanted to go back into the locker room to keep an eye on Allison, but she already had everything she needed. She walked as slowly as possible and kept looking over her shoulder.

If she takes much longer, then she is definitely up to something, thought Mia.

Mia heard footsteps behind her. When she spun around, she saw Allison walking toward her with the water bottle she had forgotten.
